2018-2019 Captains Announced!
The Moncton Wildcats are excited to announce our Captains for the upcoming 2018-2019 season as we get set for opening weekend next Friday and Sunday at the new the Avenir Centre! Wearing the ‘C’ will be defenceman Jonathan Aspirot; home Assistant Captains are forwards Jeremy McKenna and Jakob Pelletier, while Assistant Captains on the road will be Jacob Hudson and Mika Cyr.
Now entering his third season with the team, Jonathan Aspirot will step into this leadership role as a 19-year old, having proven himself both on and off the ice the past two seasons as someone who is reliable on the blueline and has great hockey sense, it was a natural fit for the season. “Aspirot is a lead by example kind of guy,” said Head Coach, Darren Rumble. “He shows up everyday weather it is a game, practice or workout ready to go, he is a quiet leader, but someone you can count on to leave it all on the ice for you every night. He is a great example for the younger players, and no doubt will be a great leader for us this year.”
Assistants at home this year are 19-year-old Jeremy McKenna and 17-year old Jakob Pelletier, both with standout seasons last year. Jeremy was a force on the ice every night, leading the team in points with 77 pts in 68 regular season games played. “Jeremy obviously had a great season last year in point production and took that momentum home with him this summer, said Rumble. “He had a great off-season and his commitment to off-ice training was second to none, he showed up this year at camp ready to go.”
Jakob Pelletier, the team’s third overall pick in the 2017 Entry Draft made a name for himself year one in the league, finishing in the top three rookies for points with 61 pts in 60 games played. Rumble had this to say about one of the younger players in the leadership group, “Pelletier had a great first year in the QMJHL, is a born leader, plays the right way on the ice, and although only 17, is a great motivator for our group.”
Wearing the ‘A’ for the second year in a row, Mika Cyr returns to the team for his third season after registering nearly a point per game last year with 40 pts in 44 games played. “Mika had a great season and has shown that he can overcome adversity, and is a strong presence for us up front during the season,” said Rumble.
Jacob Hudson will also be wearing the ‘A’ this year for the road games. Although only entering his second season with the team, Hudson has proven his leadership abilities in the past after captaining the Cape Breton West Islanders to a championship at the 2017 Telus Cup, becoming the first Atlantic Champions to ever win the tournament. “Hudson is another guy who is a great teammate, he is always encouraging and leads by example. He also had a great off-season with fitness and is doing what it takes to be primed for success on the ice this year.”
