Moncton Wildcats file intent to host the 2019 Mastercard Memorial Cup
Moncton, December 15, 2017 – Today, in front of a packed ballroom of community and business supporters, the Moncton Wildcats announced they are bidding to host the 2019 Mastercard Memorial Cup. To comply with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) requirements, the team needed to make its intent known by today.
“In 2006, the Moncton Wildcats were proud to have been trusted by the QMJHL as the host for the most prestigious Canadian Hockey League (CHL)event, the Mastercard Memorial Cup. Our entire community celebrated that historic national championship. The Moncton Wildcats want to host this world-class event again in 2019,” said Robert K. Irving, Moncton Wildcats President. “While hockey will be at the centre of everything we do, we plan to build a full community celebration, unlike one ever seen before, around the Mastercard Memorial Cup.”
This event will take advantage of Moncton’s new state-of-the-art Downtown Events Centre and will also have access to the adjacent Downtown Plaza. That will allow the #Moncton2019 bid committee to create outdoor entertainment events that will generate additional excitement around the championship and the city.
“Moncton has proven time and time again that we are the entertainment capital of Atlantic Canada. In addition to providing exciting action on the ice for hockey fans across the country, we will offer everyone a taste of the Memorial Cup through outdoor community activities and entertainment planned in and around our downtown. The Memorial Cup will add to the already long list of national and international that have been hosted in Moncton and we look forward to a successful bid for 2019,” stated Mayor Dawn Arnold.
Like in 2006, the team also plans to incorporate legacy projects to continue to strengthen amateur hockey in New Brunswick. To honour the significant military connection to the Memorial Cup, there will also be a lasting tribute to the significance this region has played for the military over the last century.
“We have our community’s support. We have our fans’ support. We have local business support. The Moncton Wildcats are looking forward to competing for the honour of becoming the host of this world-class event,” added Mr. Irving.
