MONCTON N.B. – The Moncton Wildcats have traded defenceman Louis-Philip Fortin, goaltender Dominik Tmej and Dominic Malatesta, as well as two second round picks and a fifth in 2017. In return the Wildcats have acquired the 13th overall selection in this year’s draft, a fifth round pick and an eleventh round all in 2017, as well as an eighth round pick in the 2018 QMJHL Entry Draft.
With the addition of the 13th overall selection in this year’s draft the Wildcats now hold three first round picks in the upcoming 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft on Saturday. “Having three first round picks was an absolute priority for us as we build our foundation,” said Director of Hockey Operations Roger Shannon. “We know we will get a great player at the thirteenth spot. You don’t just acquire a first round pick in a draft as deep as this without some big deals, those two second round picks that are part of this trade were key to the addition of this first round selection.”
Fortin joined the club during the Christmas trade period after playing the previous three seasons with Shawinigan. “Louis-Philip was a necessary move for us in order to get picks back that we will ultimately use to acquire our new goaltender,” said Director of Hockey Operations Roger Shannon. “He will be very good for Bathurst, and would have been good for us, but we are working on securing the correct options to ensure we will still have a solid blue line headed in to the season.”
Goaltender Dominik Tmej joined the team in the fall after playing 11 games with the Springfield Pics of the USPHL. Tmej came into his own throughout the season alongside fellow rookie goaltender Matt Waite, splitting time in nets for a good part of the season. “Everyone here really likes Dom, he is a great person on and off the ice and will be a welcomed addition to the Bathurst team and community. We are happy to give him the opportunity to continue to play in the league, and I have no doubt he will continue to develop into a great goaltender,” said Roger.
“Another part of this deal was Dom Malatesta, although he has not played with us yet, we feel that we wouldn’t be able to give him the ice time he needed for development, so we are happy to see him have that chance with the Titan.”
The 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft will being Saturday June 3rd at Harbour Station. Full draft coverage will take place on TVA Sports, Rogers TV, and tune into all of the Wildcats social media channels for up to date information.
