The Moncton Wildcats are excited to announce captains for the upcoming 2017-2018 season. After a successful pre-season, finishing top in the league with a 7-1-2 record, the team is ready and eager to get the regular season underway!
The group has added and traded for some key assets over the summer period to help set the team up for future success. With only a few returning faces from last season and still a fairly young team, the coaching staff placed high importance on selecting guys who are strong leaders both on and off the ice.
Your 2017-2018 Captain is Nicholas Welsh. Assistant Captains are: Liam Dunda, Jeremy McKenna and Mika Cyr.
“As a 20-year-old heading into his fifth season in the league Nicholas brings a wealth of experience,” said Head Coach, Darren Rumble. “He is a high end defenceman on the ice, a great teammate and person off the ice, and we are excited to have him as our captain.” During his 2016-2017 season with Shawinigan, Welsh wore the “A” playing in 67 games and recording 44 points.
Liam Dunda is joining the team after playing four years in the OHL, most recently with the Sudbury Wolves. “Liam’s reputation as a character player was key for us, and after wearing the “A” on his jersey last season we knew he would fit perfectly into a leadership role with this year’s group,” said Rumble. Dunda was also a 6th round pick by the St. Louis Blues in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
“Our two other Assistant Captains are both 18-year old returning players from last year’s group. After showing their ability on the ice last season, both Mika and Jeremy put in a lot of work over the summer and have both taken a step with their game on the ice, as well as in their leadership roles.”
