The Moncton Wildcats are this year’s 2017 QMJHL Rookie Challenge winners after defeating the Halifax Mooseheads in the final 6-2!The Cats top prospects looked strong all weekend as they went head-to-head with the best up and comers in the league.
The Wildcats had two quick goals early in the game by Colton McKenna (assists to Blackmore and Tucker) and Jakob Pelletier (assists to MacArthur and Kuzmin) to give the home team some early momentum. The Mooseheads would end up putting one on the board before the end of the frame, sending the Wildcats to the dressing room holding a 2-1 lead.
The confidence continued to build for the Wildcats in the second, notching three more goals to give the team a commanding lead over last year’s winner’s. Brodie MacArthur, Jaxon Bellamy and Jakob Pelletier all connected in the second period to put Moncton on the board again! With a comfortable 6-1 lead the team continued to push hard in the third, resulting in one more goal courtesy of Patrick Musico. After a late Halifax goal, the final would go in the books as a 6-2 win for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats went 3-0 in the tournament to capture this year’s title. There was great effort by the team this weekend, and some exciting players to watch for! Both of Moncton’s first round picks this summer, Jakob Pelletier and Jaxon Bellamy did not disappoint this weekend, Jakob putting up 8 points (5 goals and three assists) while Jaxon had a goal a game and one assist. After this weekend there is no question that it is an exciting time for the team as we look ahead.
Following today’s game two more players were released from camp – Josh Nicholson and Maxime Grandmaison.
