Wildcats Select Alexander Khovanov Second Overall in CHL Import Draft
MONCTON N.B. – With the second overall selection in this year’s CHL Import Draft the Moncton Wildcats have selected forward, Alexander Khovanov.
Born in Saratov Russia, the 17-year old centerman standing at 5’11 and weighing 180lbs played this past season with Irbis Kazan of the MHL, appearing in 29 games, registering 8 goals and 14 assists for a 22 point total. Prior to that, Alexander was with the Ak Bars Kazan of the Russian U-16 league, putting up impressive numbers of 37 points in only 13 games played.
During the 2015-2016 season Alexander was named captain of the Russian team for the Youth Olympics where he led his team to a bronze medal, also claiming the title for most assists, and most points during the event. A year later he was representing his country again at the U-17 World Hockey Championships where the again took home a bronze medal for his country.
He will once again be wearing the “C” this summer at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup which will take place on August 7th in Břeclav & Bratislava.
“Alexander has high end elite skill, he and Andrei Svechnikov (who was drafted first this year) have been the best two players in Russia for this age group for a few years now so we are very fortunate to have him. Right out of the gate he is a prospect for the next NHL Draft in 2018 which is exciting and we look forward to helping him reach that goal.”
