QMJHL cancels the 2020 President Cup Playoffs

QMJHL

After monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and the spread of the pandemic for the last two weeks, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, in collaboration with the Canadian Hockey League and its two sister leagues, the OHL and the WHL, today announces the cancellation of the 2020 President Cup Playoffs.

After cancelling all remaining regular season games last week, the Commissioner and the Assembly of Members made the difficult decision earlier today on a conference call.

In this unprecedented period of difficulty for our society, the risks of playing the 2020 President Cup playoffs became too high. The latest updates and advice shared by the Provincial and Federal public health agencies made it clear that it was inconceivable to play these games.

“This is one of the toughest decisions that we have had ever to make,” said Commissioner Gilles Courteau. “But as the situation continued to evolve over the past couple of days, it became almost impossible to consider a scenario in which the playoffs would be played. These are extremely challenging times for our society and this situation is bigger than hockey and that’s the reason why we have to make responsible decisions.”

We would to thank all of our players, our fans as well as our hockey and administrative staffs, sponsors and officials for the 2019–2020 season. We are looking forward to making announcements in the upcoming weeks in regards to the Draft Lottery and the Entry Draft.
