MONCTON N.B. – During today’s 2021 CHL Import Draft, the Moncton Wildcats proudly selected Swiss forward Jonas Taibel 13th overall.
Jonas was born in Feldkirch Austria, however, from day one he played in the Swiss league and has been part of their development program for many years. The 16-year-old is currently 5’11” and 172 lbs.
“I am feeling really good today.” “I am so happy to have the opportunity to come and play in the league, and am looking forward to coming to Moncton.” added Taibel.
This past season Jonas played for the Rapperswil U17 Elite Team in Switzerland, proving he is an offensive powerhouse he recorded two points per game. During the regular season he registered 27 goals and 39 assists, for 66 points in 33 games played. He also played part of the season with the Rapperswil U20 team as a 16-year-old, adding more than a point per game with 18 points in 14 games played.
“We are very excited to select Jonas in this year’s draft,” noted Director of Hockey Operations, Ritchie Thibeau. “Jonas is an offensive player and we are very happy he will continue his development with the Moncton Wildcats.”
Although still early in his hockey career, Jonas has represented his country many times at the international level. This past season he played for team Switzerland at the U-18 World Championships, and in 2019-2020 he represented his country at the Youth Olympic Games.
Due to the fact that Moncton has one import player already confirmed (Max Barbashev) the team only selected once today during the 2021 CHL Import Draft.
In recent years Moncton has had great success drafting impact players from overseas such as: Alexander Khovanov, Simon Le Coultre, Manuel Wiederer, Ivan Barbashev, Dmitri Jaskin and many more. We look forward to having Jonas be part of that success as we look towards the future.
